LAS COLORADAS We will also see the pink lakes of Las Coloradas. Salt in this region is a great treasure. That was for thousands of years when the ancient Maya used this area to produce very valuable salt. How do they do that? Salt ocean water from nearby mangrove spills onto hard flat plains, creating shallow lagoons. The sun slowly evaporates the water, leaving fresh sea salt.Salt was extremely important for the Maya both for nutritional needs and for food preservation. It was mined here in the northern part of Yucatan, and then transported by boat to other parts of the Mayan empire. Why is the water pink? You will learn this and not only on our trip.
